“This type of artwork is not what one might expect,” observes Dereck Glaser, metalsmithing program director at the New England School of Metalwork. “These artists generally have exceptional expertise in technical skills, tools and equipment, and various metalworking processes that weld their work into unique metal sculptures. It is fascinating not only to see their art, but to imagine all the skills that go into each item on display.”

The opening reception for the show and silent auction will be at the Center for Maine Craft on Friday, October 2 at 5-8 p.m., all invited and refreshments served. Images of the metal artwork will be on exhibit and the silent auction will continue online (www.newenglandschoolofmetalwork.com) through October 29 at midnight, after which winning bidders will be notified directly.

Proceeds from the auction are used to fund annual scholarships for one student in the Metalsmithing program and one student in the Welding program at the New England School of Metalwork. “This is where those interested in creating metal art can get their start and learn the skills they will need,” notes Glaser. Scholarship applications are available online and due by February 1 of each year, with notification by March 1.

Under the direction of the Maine Crafts Association (http://mainecrafts.org), the Center for Maine Craft includes a retail gallery for handcrafted work by Maine artisans. The Center for Maine Craft is now located at the West Gardiner Service Plaza and accessible via Route 126, I-95 South (Exit 103), I-95 North (Exit 102) or I-295 (Exit 51).

Alumni and former instructors from the New England School of Metalwork have juried into the metal art show based on their unique style and craftsmanship. With locations in Auburn, Maine and our Mobile Weld Training Center trailer for traveling to any location, the New England School of Metalwork is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational institution with courses and programs geared to all phases of welding and metalwork, from basics for beginners to advanced tutoring for skilled professionals.
August 2009:
AWS Certified Trainers
Maine Oxy and the New England School of Metalwork recently hosted the American Welding Societies Certified Welding Supervisor Seminar at their Auburn, Maine facility. The Certified Welding Supervisor seminar was developed to teach individuals the mastery that welding supervisors must be capable of demonstrating. This five-day course focuses on the knowledge a supervisor needs to support improvement of the welders' environment, productivity, throughput, weld quality and safety. Participants will learn the science rather than the art of welding for a better control of variables in the welding process. This program focuses on the economics of welding and is the first AWS program designed to enhance the profit margins of welding fabrication companies.

Fabricators, contractors and boat manufactures from the east coast attended this certification seminar. Maine Oxy had 4 salesmen and 2 of their welding instructors from the New England School of Metalwork attend. Maine Oxy would recommend this certification program to welding distributors looking to further educate and certify their employees. Three of the Maine Oxy and NESOM employees that attended are also CWE and CWI certified. They all agreed the Certified Welding Supervisor certification complemented their existing certifications.  Warren Swan the welding director at the New England school of Metalwork stated the CWS seminar does an excellent job in explaining the science of weld economics.

Maine Oxy and their customers are already seeing benefits to this CWS program.  Using the tools from the seminar Jim Boivin, Maine Oxy’s northern territory manager saved a new customer over $30,000 in weld processes and productivity.  This allowed Maine Oxy to secure the business in this very competitive account.  Any IWDC member looking for more information related to this program can contact Maine Oxy, or go to the AWS website.

military

Maine Oxy has been selected to receive an Above and Beyond Award for their service to their military employees. In addition, they have been selected to receive a Seven Seals Award for their commitment to support the service members abroad. The first presenter was Colonel Don Lagacce, Commissioner of the Maine Department of Defense, Veterans Affairs and Emergency Response. He is also the Commander of the 52 Troop Command in Bangor. The second presenter was ESGR Executive Director Josh Scroggins.

Maine Oxy had four employees deployed in 2004-2005 with the Maine and New Hampshire Army National Guard. During that deployment the company’s primary owner and CEO Bruce Albiston made sure his deployed employees were sent “Care Packages” to help make their time there a little more bearable and to spread the message to our servicemen and women that they were supported and  in our thoughts and prayers.

When Maine Oxy’s deployed personnel and their units returned, the transitions to home, family, and work were made  much easier by the understanding and  supportive culture established at Maine Oxy. Bruce Albiston, CEO states, “We will always feel it is our honor and duty to support all service members who have sacrificed their own rights and privileges, to keep safe the freedoms of others and all Americans.”
